Lola Sadykova, graduate of Psychology Department 2020, participated at the conference OSUN Senior Project Panel and presented her master thesis «Psychological aspects of Sex Workers’ Securityscapes in Bishkek». Lola had a summer internship which included conducing focus group discussion with sex workers.

"I was fascinated and triggered by their answers, and that made me find a way to help them and to defend their rights" said Lola. Study was designed to investigate how sex workers perceive security and insecurity around themselves and the strategies that they use to form the safe environment.

«What I found in my research was that the main representors of unsafety of this profession are male population. Men appeared to objectify, sexually exploit, and sexually/financially abuse women, and all of these consequences are due to the ‘culture’ and patriarchal society, in which men and their needs are prioritized over women and their needs (as an example, the need of clients/policemen to be violent vs sex workers’ need for safety). But, as I think, more research on sex workers’ securityscapes needs to be done in order to identify other actors (family, relatives, intimate partners, medical care and etc.) and realities (poverty, alcohol, drugs, immigration and etc.) of sex workers that contribute to creating of in/secure environment.»
