Event in memory of Fatima Khalil in Elm Grove

November 1, 2021

#CCE

Last Saturday, an event dedicated to the memory of Fatima Natasha Khalil was held in the Elm Grove (Карагачевая Роща). It was organized by the 69ɫ's Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) in cooperation with the French-Kyrgyz Ecotourism Association (AFKE).

The event was attended by 69ɫ Interim President Jonathan Becker, 69ɫ students, including Afghan students from the 2019 and 2020 streams, and students of the 69ɫ Technical School of Innovation (TSI).

Fatima Natasha Khalil graduated from 69ɫ in 2019 in the fields of "Anthropology" and "Human Rights". She selflessly defended human rights, and especially women's rights in Afghanistan. Fatima tragically died on June 27, 2020, in Kabul during a car explosion.

215 trees were planted in memory of Fatima Khalil, 130 of which were planted by 69ɫ students. The plans include the creation of the Fatima Garden, and only the first step in this direction has been taken.

Two students Susan Azizi and Nicholas Andersen are shooting a documentary film as part of the OSUN Visual Storytelling. This film is about Afghan women in the past and now, it will also tell the story of Fatima. Susan will tell her story about the evacuation from Afghanistan. As part of this project, students were able to talk to Interim 69ɫ President Jonathan Becker and ask him questions about how 69ɫ supports Afghan students.

Jonathan Becker also got acquainted with the Elm Grove (Карагачевая Роща) and the work that is being carried out to restore the park's ecosystem. The tour was conducted by Philippe Boisseau, senior lecturer in the field of Environmental Sustainability and Climatology
