On December 4, 2024, Dr. Olivier Bangerter, the Swiss Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic, gave an insightful speech at the American University of Central Asia (69色) as part of the ICP Ambassador Talks. His presentation, titled 鈥淪witzerland and Kyrgyzstan: Key Elements of a Lasting Friendship,鈥 explored the diplomatic ties, shared values, and future prospects for collaboration between the two nations.

Dr. Bangerter began by discussing the nature of his role as a diplomat. As the Swiss Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, he highlighted the complexities and importance of fostering strong international relationships. Diplomacy, he explained, requires a deep understanding of not only political and economic matters but also the cultural and social nuances of both countries.

Swiss foreign policy, according to Dr. Bangerter, is built on a foundation of neutrality, peace, and humanitarian values. He emphasized that Switzerland鈥檚 approach to diplomacy is guided by the principles of respect for human rights, democracy, and international cooperation. These principles, he noted, align closely with Kyrgyzstan's own aspirations and values.

While discussing Swiss democracy, Dr. Bangerter briefly touched on the nation's unique political system. Switzerland鈥檚 model of direct democracy, where citizens can influence legislation through referendums, stands as a beacon of civic engagement and political transparency. This system, he pointed out, reflects the country鈥檚 deep commitment to inclusivity and citizen participation.

The Ambassador also spoke about the Swiss national languages鈥擥erman, French, Italian, and Romansh鈥攁nd the country鈥檚 commitment to preserving its rich linguistic and cultural diversity. This diversity is mirrored in Kyrgyzstan, which, with its variety of ethnic groups and languages, shares Switzerland鈥檚 emphasis on maintaining harmony among different cultures and religions.

Dr. Bangerter took a moment to reflect on the long-standing diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Kyrgyzstan. He noted that Switzerland was one of the first countries to open an embassy and consulate in Kyrgyzstan, marking the beginning of formal diplomatic relations in the early years following the country鈥檚 independence.

This collaboration has evolved over the years, with the two nations working together on various fronts, including multilateral cooperation, development programs, and tourism. The Ambassador emphasized that Switzerland has been an active partner in Kyrgyzstan鈥檚 development, particularly in the areas of education, governance, and economic reforms.听
